Job description

We are the leading provider of professional services to the middle market globally, our purpose is to instill confidence in a world of change, empowering our clients and people to realize their full potential. Our exceptional people are the key to our unrivaled, inclusive culture and talent experience and our ability to be compelling to our clients. You’ll find an environment that inspires and empowers you to thrive both personally and professionally. There’s no one like you and that’s why there’s nowhere like RSM.

The Risk Manager leads daily operations of RSM’s enterprise insurance program, including oversight of captive insurance activities, and enterprise insurance program management. The role serves as the primary day-to-day advisor to internal stakeholders on insurance, risk financing/optimization, and claims topics; coordinates external partners (brokers, insurers, reinsurers, captive managers, actuaries, auditors, TPAs, banks/investment advisors); and ensures regulatory, financial, and operational excellence across the program.

Key Responsibilities

Captive and Enterprise Insurance Operations and Governance

  • Manage day-to-day captive and commercial insurance operations: policy issuance/endorsements, program administration, premium billing/allocations, and board preparation (agendas, minutes, performance packs).
  • Maintain regulatory compliance with domicile requirements (annual statements, audited financials, actuarial opinions, change-of-business-plan filings; board meeting cadence and documentation).
  • Coordinate financial reporting & audits: management accounts, statutory accounts, capital/surplus monitoring, liquidity planning, and investment oversight in line with domicile rules.
  • Manage actuarial coordination: reserving methodology (including IBNR), premium/pricing reviews, and capital adequacy analyses; ensure timely SAO preparation by appointed actuary.
  • Align corporate governance practices and ERM linkage consistent with insurance governance frameworks (board oversight of underwriting, reinsurance, investment risk).
  • Support ORSA/ERM coordination (where applicable) to align captive strategy and risk appetite with enterprise solvency assessments.

External Vendor Management

  • Partner with brokers to benchmark coverage, negotiate terms, and place fronting and reinsurance structures behind the captive.
  • Manage fronting carriers and reinsurers: contracts/treaties, counterparty due diligence, and collateral arrangements to support credit for reinsurance and fronting obligations.
  • Oversee captive manager scope and performance (accounting, regulatory, treasury, policy admin, claims coordination).
  • Orchestrate auditors, actuaries, bankers/investment advisors: audit timelines, actuarial deliverables, LOC/trust administration and investment eligibility.

Program Strategy, Renewals and Analytics

  • Lead renewal strategy: exposure data gathering, application completeness, and scenario analyses (retention, attachment points, diversification effects) to optimize total cost of risk.
  • Assess lines appropriate for captive retention and evaluate feasibility/expansion opportunities (including cell structures as relevant).
  • Track industry trends and domicile developments to inform program evolution and governance enhancements.

Collateral, Credit, and Treasury

  • Structure collateral solutions (LOCs, trust accounts) for fronting and reinsurance credit; monitor amounts, evergreen provisions, and release mechanics as program years mature.
  • Optimize capital & liquidity between parent and captive (cash, investments, dividend planning) while meeting solvency and regulatory requirements.

Claims Oversight and Loss Control

  • Establish claims governance: monitor claim reserves/trends, challenge large-loss strategies, and ensure timely reporting and disposition; coordinate TPAs and defense counsel as needed.
  • Translate claims insights into actionable loss prevention and operational improvement initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Communication and Executive Advising
  • Serve as trusted advisor to senior leaders and business units on insurance and risk financing decisions; prepare executive briefings and board materials with clear, data-driven recommendations.
  • Present complex captive and insurance topics in concise, decision-ready formats.

Additional Competencies

  • Strategic Thinking and Decision-Making: Anticipate market/captive trends; translate analytics into capital-efficient structures.
  • Leadership and Team Development: Lead cross-functional squads and mentor analysts; set clear expectations and drive outcomes.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Negotiation: Influence brokers, carriers, insurers, and regulators toward optimal terms and compliance.
  • Change Management and Innovation: Champion alternative structures and technology-enabled process improvements.
  • Analytical and Critical Thinking: Apply actuarial/financial insights to reserving and capital; interpret scenario modeling outputs.
  • Communication and Presentation: Convert complex topics into executive-ready briefs and board packs.
  • Business Acumen: Align program strategy with operational and financial objectives; optimize cost of risk.
  • Ethical Judgment and Integrity: Uphold governance standards; ensure transparent reporting and audit readiness.
  • Project Management: Deliver renewals, audits, filings, and collateral milestones on time and within budget.

Qualifications
Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in risk management, finance, accounting, economics or related field.
  • 5–8+ years in risk/insurance management, captive operations, or complex account management.
  • Demonstrated captive exposure (policy admin, reserving coordination, audit readiness, domicile filings).
  • Vendor management experience with brokers, captive managers, TPAs, actuaries, auditors, fronting carriers, reinsurers, and banking/trust partners.
  • Proficiency in project management and analytics for renewal and capital optimization decisions.
  • Strong communication and executive-level presentation skills.

Preferred

  • Professional designations: CPA, CFA, ARM, CPCU, ARe (or equivalent).
  • Experience participating in industry events and networking to track emerging captive and risk financing / optimization trends
