The Payments Data and Analytics team is responsible for defining and executing the multi-year global analytics strategy and roadmap.  We are a new and rapidly growing team of change agents inside J.P. Morgan. Job Summary :


The Data Scientist Associate role with the Payments Data and Analytics team is responsible for executing big data analytics projects in response to product innovation and customer support for Merchant Services. Tangible output of the programs are payments insights that drive optimization of authorization, for large merchants – as well as deep consumer and business insights. As the analytics mature, these insights can be productized into products for merchants (“insights as a service”).


Job responsibilities:


  • Develop analytic projects through understanding the business objectives in the team strategy roadmap
  • Provide a high level of responsiveness to client ad-hoc requests related to payment performance analysis. This include data collection, synthesis, and translation of results into concrete actionable solutions in support of those clients.
  • Specific tasks include writing and running SQL queries, creating tables, preparing data, creating tableau visualizations and producing PowerPoint and excel spreadsheets that deliver insight both as an individual contributor and in collaboration with team mates.
  • Through deep subject matter expertise, create actionable recommendations to merchants on how to optimize their payment performance
  • Validation of team’s SQL scripts, Tableau visualization and ad hoc analyses
  • Develop automated data validation process to ensure quality and completeness of data consumed from source datacts.

Required qualifications, capabilities and skills:


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, statistics, mathematics or similar technical or quantitative field
  • 3+ years of working in a big data environment as a contributing member in self-directed roles
  • Must have deep experience in SQL. Experience in automation and Python are preferred
  • Experience using Data Visualization tools such as Tableau
  • Basic awareness of Big Data technologies & their applications
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT)
  • Ability to perform rapid prototyping in Tableau or any BI tool is a plus
  • Expertise in quantitative research techniques and analytics using R, python or MATLAB is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to distill KPIs and other performance metrics from data
  • Ability to clearly develop and document analytic requirements with stakeholders
  • Experience in the payments industry and/or technology-enabled industries is desirable
  • Strong aptitude for technical concepts and ideas
  • High achievement orientation with ability to motivate others around results
  • Ability to work well within deadlines
  • Exceptional analytical, problem solving, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work across functions as well as with outside parties to ensure alignment and timely implementation of initiatives
  • Proven strategic thinking and creative problem solving skills with ability to translate strategy into deliverables
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
