Job description

Amex GBT is a place where colleagues find inspiration in travel as a force for good and – through their work – can make an impact on our industry. We’re here to help our colleagues achieve success and offer an inclusive and collaborative culture where your voice is valued.

We are seeking an API Gateway Engineer with strong hands-on experience designing, building, securing, and operating API platforms using AWS API Gateway and/or Apigee. The role will focus on API lifecycle management, traffic governance, security (OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, mTLS), policy development, observability, and reliable CI/CD-based deployments. The ideal candidate will also bring full-stack development experience to help teams build and integrate backend services and modern web applications, and to drive best practices for API design, versioning, documentation, and performance.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, develop, and operate API gateways and API management platforms (AWS API Gateway, Apigee) for internal and external consumers.
  • Build and manage API products, proxies, routes/resources, stages/environments, throttling, quotas, caching, and usage plans.
  • Implement API security patterns: OAuth2/OIDC, JWT validation, API keys, mTLS, WAF integration, rate limiting, and threat protection.
  • Develop and maintain gateway policies (Apigee policies / AWS authorizers, request/response transformations, validation, mediation).
  • Build serverless and container-based integrations using AWS Lambda, ECS/EKS, and any backend services using any one of the programming languages such as Java/Spring Boot or Node.js or Python.
  • Implement API governance: REST standards, naming conventions, versioning strategy, backward compatibility, and deprecation process.
  • Create and maintain API specifications (OpenAPI/Swagger), documentation, developer portal content, and onboarding guides.
  • Integrate API gateway with IAM, Cognito/Identity providers, secrets management, and certificate management.
  • Set up end-to-end observability: logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, and alerts using any one of the platforms including CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry, ELK or New Relic.
  • Diagnose and resolve production issues related to latency, throttling, auth failures, routing, certificates, and backend dependencies.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automation (GitHub Actions/Jenkins, Terraform/CloudFormation, Maven/npm) for repeatable deployments.

What We're looking for

  • Experience Required-5+ years in API
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS API Gateway (REST API / HTTP API), stages, deployments, custom domains, throttling, caching, usage plans, and integrations.
  • OR strong hands-on experience with Apigee, including API proxies, policies, shared flows, environments, and deployments.
  • Strong understanding of REST API design and best practices; experience with OpenAPI (Swagger).
  • Solid experience implementing API security: OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, API keys, RBAC, mTLS, certificates, and integration with IdPs.
  • Experience with backend integration patterns: synchronous REST, async/event-driven basics; request/response transformation and validation.
  • Good proficiency in at least one backend language/framework (Java/Spring Boot or Node.js or Python).
  • Full-stack understanding: ability to work with front-end frameworks (React or Angular) and connect to APIs.
  • Experience with AWS fundamentals: IAM, VPC, CloudWatch, Lambda, S3, KMS, Route 53, ACM (certificates).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in distributed systems (timeouts, retries, rate limits, TLS issues, dependency failures).
  • Strong communication and documentation skills for cross-functional work.
