Job description

Some careers shine brighter than others.

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC and fulfil your potential. Whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, HSBC offers opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Associate Director, Software Engineering.

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver end-to-end web solutions using React/TypeScript, Node.js/Python, and MongoDB/SQL.
  • Assess the current stack, identify technical debt, and drive a remediation roadmap.
  • Define and implement modular API/service architecture with clear versioning strategies.
  • Own infrastructure integration including secure service accounts, secrets management (Vault), and secure configuration.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins with quality gates and controlled artefact promotion.
  • Embed security and observability (validation, dependency scans, logs/metrics/traces, error budgets) across services.
  • Optimise performance and reliability through caching, async processing, query tuning, and safe release strategies (canary/blue-green/rollback).

To be successful, you will:

  • Strong React and TypeScript skills, including component architecture, accessibility, and performance tuning.
  • Backend expertise in Node.js (Express/Nest) and Python (FastAPI/Flask, asyncio) for scalable service development.
  • Proven CI/CD capability with Jenkins (declarative/scripted pipelines), quality gates, and automated deployments.
  • Secure service-to-service authentication using IAM/RBAC, OAuth2/JWT, and credential rotation/least-privilege controls.
  • Solid REST API design experience (JSON schema, versioning) and data engineering with MongoDB & SQL (indexing, schema evolution, query optimisation).
  • Hands-on with Docker containerisation, image hardening, Redis caching, and session/state management.
  • Strong engineering hygiene: observability (structured logs/metrics/tracing), automated testing (Jest/Pytest/contract/e2e), OWASP-aligned security, and performance profiling/optimisation.

You’ll achieve more when you join HSBC.
