Job Description


Business Overview


BlackRock’s Risk & Quantitative Analysis (RQA) group provides independent oversight of BlackRock’s fiduciary and enterprise risks. The Enterprise Risk team within RQA oversees those risks which directly impact the corporate entity (i.e. BlackRock, Inc., or one of its subsidiaries), rather than the fiduciary risks assumed by funds/clients, such as investment risks and counterparty risks.  The team’s focus includes but is not limited to: operational risk, technology, vendor, model and market risk, stress testing for market risk and the quantitative estimation of capital adequacy requirements. 



 Model Validation team in Model Risk Management  


The Model Validation team is an integral part of the global Model Risk Management Team.  The Global Model Risk Management function within the Enterprise Risk team is responsible for developing the firm-wide Model Risk Management framework and the implementation of the framework across BlackRock.


Key responsibility of the Model Validation team is performing independent reviews of models, primarily, the models produced and owned by the Alladin Financial Engineering (AFE) group. The team works with the model owners and other stakeholders (e.g. model users; governance representatives etc.), design and run independent testing of the models, and provide effective challenge to the model’s methodology and implementation, focusing on the usage cases of the models.


Responsibilities:


  • Evaluate conceptual soundness of models by evaluating the model theory (incl. model assumptions, limitations), model construction and model testing in relation to the known model use cases.
  • Review adequacy of testing performed by model owners and design and execute efficient independent model testing both standardized and tailored to specifics of the model’s type, implementation and usage.
  • Document validation approach, observations, findings and conclusions in comprehensive validation reports.
  • Communicate model validation conclusions to relevant stakeholders, including escalating identified model findings, risks or gaps to senior management, and presenting model validation outcomes to relevant Model Approval Committees (MAC).

Qualifications:


We are looking for candidates who are strong in at least two of the below four criteria, and are reasonably good with potential to learn in the others:


  • Broad market and finance knowledge, with deep expertise in certain asset class areas.
  • Strong Mathematics, Statistics and Analytical skills.
  • Strong technical background, including fluency in different system and/or programming languages.
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to explain sophisticated financial and technical concepts in a way appropriate to different target audiences, as well as preparing and delivering efficient public presentations.

Any of the below specific knowledge, skills or experiences will be additional bonus for a successful candidate (please note not everything from the list is expected, different combinations will be considered and appreciated):


  • Advanced Degree (MS, PhD) in a quantitative discipline
  • Experience in quantitative model development or validation
  • Understanding/experience with of some of the model types:
    • Derivatives pricing and hedging models
    • Risk factor, Portfolio risk, VaR models
    • Portfolio construction and Optimization models
    • Liquidity and T-cost models
    • Performance attribution models
    • AI/ML models
    • Prepayment and default models
    • Economic factor, curves, volatility surface models
    • other
  • Confident programming/usage of some of the following:
    • Python
    • R
    • C++
    • SQL
    • Hadoop
    • Linux applications
    • Advanced Excel modelling / VBA
    • Other languages/applications
  • Deep market expertise in some of the asset classes:
    • Equity
    • FI
