Job description

Some careers shine brighter than others.

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC and fulfil your potential. Whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, HSBC offers opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Associate Director, Software Engineering.

In this role, you will:

  • Define and evolve the technical direction for Static and Product Reference Data, aligned to HSBC’s Data Strategy and target architecture.
  • Set and govern engineering principles for reference data services (modelling, versioning, lineage, interoperability, and backwards compatibility).
  • Drive AI-enabled engineering practices to improve quality, developer productivity, and time-to-market.
  • Lead modernisation and technical debt reduction, prioritising changes that simplify platforms and reduce operational risk.
  • Run cross-team design reviews and provide hands-on guidance on complex engineering decisions; establish “golden paths” (templates, reference implementations, reusable components).
  • Coach senior engineers and tech leads through mentoring and shared learning, raising standards and consistency across teams.
  • Improve reliability and observability across pipelines and services; lead major incident triage and post-incident actions with measurable outcomes.
  • Embed security, risk, and compliance by design (least privilege, encryption, auditability, segregation of duties, safe releases), meeting control standards without slowing delivery.

To be successful, you will:

  • A strong engineering background and a passionate hands-on technologist with the ability to communicate effectively with different levels in the organisation.
  • Strong background in data platforms and data engineering at enterprise scale (batch and/or streaming), with a focus on reliability and operability.
  • Proven ability to set and drive adoption of engineering standards (CI/CD, testing, documentation, operational readiness).
  • Strong understanding of data quality, lineage/metadata concepts, and how to build trusted datasets and services.
  • Comfortable operating in regulated environments with audit and control requirements.
  • Experience with cloud-native data services (e.g., BigQuery, Dataflow/Beam, dbt, Airflow/Composer) and cost/performance optimisation.
  • Experience designing reference data distribution patterns (APIs, authorised views, secure file transfer) and consumer contracts.
  • Familiarity with domain modelling for product/reference data and versioning strategies.

You’ll achieve more when you join HSBC.
