Happiness in Lebanon is Looks Positive in 2017 as Social Life and Social Relationships Thrive for Respondents

In2017, happiness and wellbeing in the Middle East and North Africa have come into focus more than ever. A new survey by Bayt.com, the number one job site in the Middle East, and YouGov, a pioneer in online market research, titled the Bayt.com ‘Happiness in the Middle East’ survey, revealed that more than four in ten (41%) respondents in Lebanon are satisfied with their current standard of living, at least to some degree.

To determine levels of happiness in the Middle East, the survey addressed elements of respondents’ personal lives, their professional lives, their current country of residence, and other aspects of life relating to their health and wellbeing.

Respondents rated the top five most important factors that impact their general happiness levels in their country of residence. In Lebanon, leading a stable financial life was stated as the most important factor by61% of respondents. This was followed by general safety and security (55%), employment opportunities (49%), ability to maintain healthy personal relationships (41%), low cost of living (32%), and clean environment (32%).

Happiness with Personal Life

According to the survey, personal life elements that respondents in Lebanon are most satisfied with include relationship with family (83% of respondents are satisfied), current physical health (82%), mental wellbeing (76%), independence to take one’s own decisions (74%), freedom to socialize (72%), and support received from family (68%).

Health-related factors emerged in the survey as important contributors to Lebanon respondents’ happiness and wellbeing. More than three quarters (79%) of respondents describe their general state of health as good or excellent, and more than six in ten (62%) are not currently suffering from any health issues.

Happiness with Professional Life

As for their professional lives, factors that respondents in Lebanon are most satisfied with include working hours (51% of respondents are satisfied), freedom to take decisions at work (49%), support from colleagues and coworkers (47%), and recognition at work (46%).

Other factors that contribute to Lebanon respondents’ work satisfaction revolve around stress levels, and career advancement. Nearly a third (32%) are satisfied with the amount of stress they face at work; and a similar portion (30%) are satisfied with the availability of career advancement opportunities.

Happiness with Country of Residence

Respondents in Lebanon are satisfied with many factors pertaining to their country of residence, including comfortable weather (73%), ability to maintain healthy personal relationships (68%), opportunities to socialize (62%), access to educational institutions (52%) and availability of entertainment avenues (48%).

Happiness and Stress

Stress is another element of happiness addressed by the Bayt.com survey. For respondents in Lebanon, factors that contribute the most to stress levels are an increase in the cost of living (74%), current economic situation of the country of residence (60%), and work related issues (56%). Nonetheless, nearly one fifth (13%) of respondents in Lebanon have low stress levels.

Data for the2016 Bayt.com ‘Happiness in the Middle East’ survey was collected online from6 December,2016 to22 December,2016. Results are based on a sample of3,747 respondents. Cities assessed include UAE, KSA, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Syria.
