  • 62% of respondents prefer to be self-employed.
  • ‘Personal fulfilment’ and ‘freedom to choose work-life balance’ emerge as the top reasons for preferring to be self-employed at53% and41% respectively.
  • Regular income and learning new skills are reported as the top reasons for those who prefer to seek employment in a company. (Both at43%)
  • Real Estate/Property Development and Commerce/Trade/Retail are considered to be the most appealing industries for entrepreneurship at11% and9% respectively.
  • Of those who are self-employed, nearly7 in10 respondents took the first step to establish their business in the last5 years. Data for the Bayt.com ‘Entrepreneurship in the Middle East and North Africa’2017 survey was collected online from October1 to October22,2017, with4,570 respondents from the UAE, KSA, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, Sudan and Pakistan.
