This happened to me before and the way i handled it was that i divided the class into sub-groups...keep the upper group engaged with an exercise whiles taking care of the lower group...then do the vice versa.

The team approach is the way to go.  Assign the most proficient student to  less proficient students.  Present the daily lesson the allow the class to resolve into xplanation groups.  The proficient student gains understanding by explaining the material.  The less proficient student gains by having a peer/student explain in a manner they feel comfortable with.

After the session do feed back by asking what did the student learn and what problems they are having.

Divide the multilevel learners in groups according to their abilities, provides instructions to each group to the selected level, when all the groups attend the particular selected level, intigrate all the group after achieving the base, thus you can proceed for achieving the set goal.

Difficult but you have to look for the lowest common denominator, start at that level and hopefully build the level of difficulty slowly, keeping pace with the needs of all. It is no good starting at a higher level as you will "lose" many of the less abled learners, conversely if you start at the lower level EVERYONE will be able to follow although the slow progress might be frustrating for the upper strata of learners.
