It comes in stages, but hard work is always present in disguise. Hard Work is quality oriented and Smart Work is "often" quantity oriented.
If in the first stage you invest proper time and effort in perfecting a certain task using your hard work, then the next big stage would be re-creating the same results faster with lesser effort. The later, which I call Optimization of Process, is the Smart Work which ideally puts the left hemisphere of the brain into action.
The word "often" is quoted for the reason that Smart Work is confused with Short-Cut which neglects the effects of Risk in most cases.
Higher Productivity = Smart and Hard work
Although Hard work gurantees in acheiveing the target, working smart will outstand in saving time and energy!
