Difference between COMPANY and COMPANY CODE?

Company is the Organisation where company code is the Legal Intity where the company can have more than one company code.

As of my understanding, the word of "company" refers the Organization whereas the "company code" refers the Legal entity(s). It could be one or more.

Can one Charts of accounts be assigned to several company codes?
