When I film using my SLR camera and then link to the video files in Avid, they don't play very well. They stall and freeze, it's horrible. But when I film using a P2 camera, this doesn't happen. I checked and aspect ratio, resolution and it's all fine. Also when I edit in Premier I don't have any problems with it. Why does this only happen with SLR files when I use Avid?
There are two types of video codecs: Acquistion codecs and editing codecs. Usualy, SLR cameras, use the h264 codec which is an acquisition codec. These are very processor intensive and should be transcoded to the DNxHD native file format in Avid.
But don't throw your towel just yet. Don't read your files directly from the camera card. Copy them to a hard drive first and link them from there. if you have done so and still have the same issue, your computer might not have enough processing power to execute the task.
I do not know what Avid version you are using but just for the record, the latest version (7) have greatly improved the performance with AMA linked files. Hope this helps
