In my experience there are two types of mimic board, one is a simple “repeater panel" which carries copies of the main indicators and controls available on the fire alarm panel itself.

The other type is a schematic plan of the building with zones identified and an indicator lamp in each zone to indicate where an activation has occurred (usually with a buzzer and a keyswitch to silence the buzzer).

Nowadays the latter type can also appear as part of a building management software application on a computer.

Possible. Each zone will be protected by "conventional" detectors (smoke or thermal). Conventional detectors have two states, normal and alarm. Each zone is wired back to the fire indicator panel
