Can Good Looks Get You the Job? does it matter?

It is a simple fact of life that looking more confident can increase one’s chances of success, as people appear to be naturally drawn to people who exude confidence; this may be the reason behind the oft quoted maxim “fake it till you make it.” What may also be true is that having a good looks and physical appearance may lead to people having more confidence when they apply to jobs in any field, and that greater confidence may also translate into greater odds at landing a given job. What do you think ?

I think to a certain extent you are right. There are studies that support the notion that good looking people not only get hired quickly but also move up the hierarchy ladder faster than their normal looking colleagues. However, the other side of the story is that in order to get the maximum benefit of beauty, s/he should have proper intelligence and skills to retain their positions in an origanization.

sure i try no hire someone who is offensive., but i make an exception if they are smart.

Yes. But for me when you say "good looks" you mean "being presentable." A person's physical appearance should not not be the basis of giving him/her the job. That is being unfair. We are all born imperfect yet unique. Imperfect so that what we lack we can find in others or so that others can complete us. Unique, because if we are the same, then the world is not as happy as it can be.

It is not about having a small waistline or smooth skin, but about being decent or presentable, wearing the right clothes. Not all that are physically attractive are pleasing to the eye. Having a positive attitude and decent frame of mind will always be classy.

Depends on whom you are working for. If Vijay Malya, yes. :-)

Also, it depends on what your work is related to. Customer facing roles might consider looks and presentability as important criteria.

However, good looks is not a guarantee of confidence. Confidence comes out of positive thoughts and the ability to manage the environment or the perception or belief that you are in control.
