TO BE A BIG FISH IN A SMALL POND OR A SMALL FISH IN A BIG POND?

Dear Ahmed Essam

Thank you for your question. The answer could be either way. A small association offers a set of challenges as does working fOr a big association. I am treating the word association as a company or a firm as these are essentially associations formed by coming together of a small number or a large number of people.

In smaller firms an employee gets all round experience as he or she may have to don more than one hat. In other words, employees may have to shoulder more responsibilities and are required to attend to diverse tasks as there is no availability of enough number of people.  As such for gaining all round experience a small association happens to be offering more chances of quicker growth in skills and status.

On the contrary, in a bigger association, one tends to get compartmentalized and gets to work day in and day out on a single assigned  task. In bigger organizations, proper structures of requisite  magnitude  in terms of  well defined departments, functions, territories are put in place. As a result an employee may not get exposure to tasks other than  the ones assigned and as a result may  take longer to develop complete understanding to become an all round player.

If one argues for working in a bugger entity, it can be argued that, here one gets to work for a well known organization/ brand that is established on a national or even international scale. Bigger firms could also offer Chances of gaining in depth knowledge, skill & experience. One could even hope to work abroad if one is employed in a multinational. Experience with a bigger and well  known firm actually offers increased chances of employment and as a consequence one could aim to get higher positions and better salaries

The answer to your question could be actually yes and no. both are having advantages and disadvantages. It is for the employee to choose depending on his or her needs

It depends on whether one wants to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in big pond.

Of course I do. Why not? I've always worked for small companies and I am proud of it. More than the80% of the companies in Spain are small companies. So, it's normal to work in one of them. They teach you also to be flexible. I mean, you can be a Manager but at the same time, maybe you have to buy paper, take the car or the van to the mechanic,... you also have a closer contact with workers so, you can have direct information of what happens inside the company, what happens with competitors, with your products, and so on.

It all depends on many aspects. But for me no. If you're a professional and already in the midst of your managerial or directorate level..you'll be having a different view...and that's for a long term career where you can see yourself retiring with a much bigger association.

I work in a small association is already, but I find work in large companies is much better because he has the system and a list of work and rights reserved and experience will be much bigger, but I was in a small institution gave me the experience is relatively small for project management at the beginning of my career and I think that gaining experience managementprojects at the beginning of professional life qualify me for future work in large companies with confidence

in the beginning of your career it's better to work in big one to learn from other people and managers that have more experince, and after some years (3-5 years ) start to be the project owner it's better to start in small one

If you are in small company of course there will be not more resource but u can handle it with more struggles and there are u can learn more in starting stage of your carrier.

But for the big company there are systematical procedures which you have to fallow and u can learn more in specific part of safety
