  • The following will determine the correct crane position:
  • 1. Position should allow sufficient crane capacity at project perimeters
  • 2. Position should create air rights / over flying problems with neighboring structures
  • 3. Position should not interfere with the project structure or related systems
  • 4. Position should not interfere with access into the construction project
  • 5. Position will make the erection & dismantle process easier and save costs
  • 5. Easy position for construction material unloading?
  • 6. Best position for ease of storage
  • 7. Position effect due to high wind situations. Are we able to work downwind
  • 8. What hook height is required
  • 9. What working radius is required to access all areas of the project? Will one need more than1 crane
  • . What lifting capacity is required at the maximum radius
  • . What type of tower crane foundation suites the project
  • Above are just a quick insight to various options.

1- It should be place in a center area so it can serve the most of the project

2- you should put it in a place where you can easy dismantle it after finish the project

3- you should locate it in a place near to the loading area (stores and truck roads)

1. to the location where the ground bearing capacity can carry your cranes as per manufacturers recommendation.

2. to the location where you need  and expect to do more lifting works.

Largely depends on the type of project and the size of the foot print of construction area. Basic requirements are that it should be in a position where it can reach material delivery area and the area where the heavy lift is required in the construction zone (may be more than one is required, of course overlapping should be carefully studied). Also one important point is to locate it in such a way that it will not need relocation and it will not hinder movements of vehicle and materials in the site. If the project is a tower construction then it should also be easily extendable vertically and will not affect any work otherthan finishing.

the best location for a tower crane should be somewhere where the effective radius of the arm can reach the loading area and reach the most critical area of the construction site. depending on the size of the project, sometimes you need to install two or maybe more tower cranes. note that in most countries there's a city regulation to be followed in installing this type of equipment (i.e, distance from power lines, encroachment, type of nearby facilities, etc.) so you must be very sure that everything were properly considered be erection.

First of all you will need a layout of the complete project site, and draw a circle big enough that includes all the areas in which the crane will be needed, this will give you the working radius of the crane, in case that the radius is too big or only one circle its not enough for all the area, then you will need two cranes.

Once you know the area where you want your crane ( the centre of the circles) surely you will have to make a geotechnical study of the ground to make sure is strong enough for supporting the crane, and for calculate the basement that will be required.

Also you have to make sure that in the working radius of the crane you have enough space for storage and enough unloading/loading areas for trucks to unload/load safely.

You also have to make sure that during construction the crane will not be a problem interfering with the building or whatever it is the project about.

Watch out carefully for electricity cables, telephone lines etc, not only surface, but also underground, make sure it will not be a problem for the basement of the crane.

Make sure that where you want to place you can mount the crane and more important dismantle when the project is finished, surely to put in a mobile crane for mounting the crane at the beggining of the project will not be a problem, but when the project it's finished and there's a big building and the mobile crane can't reach, then you have a huge problem!!! To dismantle a crane with helicopter it's very expensive...XDXDXD

And more or less with Faraz Ahmed answer I think so you can have a pretty good idea on how to choose the location.

One more thing: if you are going to put two tower crane or more; make sure that the working radius has an overlap area between them, like this you can change the load from one crane to another.
