Here are the precautionary measures:
1. Ensure that the contractor selected by your company to carry out the lifts was selected by your company based on their proven safety record. Selecting unknown lift contractor is an invitation to an accident. This is so important,
2. Based on the lift schedule of the project, each lift should be pre reviewed by your company HSE and Lift Engineer and a lift plan is to be produced by the contractor. Part of the review is to look at the Risk Assessment. The lift plan is a package that will include the ff:
a. Drawings highlighting the pick and set of the load.
b. Specifications of crane/s and the load.
c. 3rd party certificates of all rigging equipment and personnel
3. The lift is to be controlled by a PTW.
4. Hold a formal meeting prior to the lift, The Risk Assessment is to be reviewed during meeting. Include all safety concerns. Ensure that a contingency plan is included in the RA.
5. Carry out the lift during morning, note that wind speed increases during afternoon.
6. Carry out a crew meeting prior to the lift, attended by all personnel involved in the lift. Meeting is to be recorded.
7. The crane operator must carry out visual inspection of the crane and this has to be recorded.
8. Affected areas should cease working prior to start of lift.
9. Film every lift if allowed. In the event of failure the captured footage will serve as an information to prevent similar fault.
10. Monitor the lift by ensuring that each job steps performed by contractor is in line with the Risk Assessment.
11. Every successful lift is to be celebrated.
Following precautions can be used for the safety of peoples and safe working at work place:
Develop and implement safe system of work.
Hire the trained and professional staff.
Plan the job/work and better is to break down the job into portions.
Obtain the permit of work and ensure all the safety precautions are adopted.
Deliver the information to workers about the work and machinery to be used in this work.
Use of machinery to do this job should be safe and checked thoroughly.
Lift the load under the safe limits and don't try to exceed the lifting limits of lifting machinery at all.
Barricade the work place and entry should be restricted to authorized personals only.
Maintain contact with the workers and communicate with them all the time.
Emergency response plan and services should be in place and ready to respond immediately in case of incident.
Adopt other precautions according to the working situation.
