The time span between opening of financial statements (c/f previous balance sheet) & the closing of business transactions for final report is called accounting period.

Normally this is one year so as to derive the financial  position of the company.  It differs from country to country .  This is a statutory requirement for any institution to submit its financial position to the authorities
