Linux & other open source falvour is suitable for back end because it is not easy to use for end user although all services are available now and stable.  Windows can be use by any end user and they feel comfortable to use it that is a beauty of windows and reason of success. I agreed Linux is powerful OS but those for IT professionals or technical user who want to understand the technology. Winodws is adopting linux or unix structure in new OS if you notice.

The most important feature is that you don't have to restart the Linux system if any program or software update is done where as in windows, you have to restart the system for the changes to take effect

Windows GUI is very helpful for administrators with low experience in the Linux and Unix OSs.

So you can use windows servers to introduce Directory Services, file and Print sharing easily without administration overhead and save your team members time in such tasks.

Also the Integration between Linux/Unix based systems will be easier and more productive.

Windows can be completely eliminated from your Environment, from providing services to access those services.

To answer the question, there is no need for windows if you have linux,

any of the services can be provided with LINUX.

If you have been working with Windows and are planing to switch to a Flexible & Cost effective counterpart.

Linux / Unix is all you need.

from LDAP for Directory Service, to Samba for Fileshare to Apache for Web,

from IPtables for Security to Postfix for email,

Asterisk for Telephony to Nagios for monitoring. and from Ubuntu Flavors & Fedora for Desktop.

The Possibility are limitless.

Since a lot of Linux Flavors are Opensource you can Develop it to your requirement.

from Media & Graphic application to Airline Systems. not to mention Petabyte of Resources and Thousands of Companies and Individuals who develop them.

in my personal experience, i use linux in my day to day life. from Media Center to my personal Firewall & PC at home.
