1. DCS is process oriented while SCADA is data oriented.

2. DCS concentrates on Control Processes and present the data to user/ operator while SCADA concentrates on requirements of Control Unit.

3. SCADA maintains a database while DCS is always connected to its data source, hence no need of database.

4. DCS has a closed-loop Control system at PCS/RTU level while SCADA does not have it.

> Most DCS and SCADA systems today come with same standard facilities like events, archiving, HMI, reporting, DB management & logging as well as remote Control centers.

Here is the chief difference between SCADA & DCS systems.

1) A SCADA system is a control & supervision system that only coordinates (as implies from its name SUPERVISORY CONTROL and Data Acquisition), but does not completely control the industrial processes in real time. On the other hand, a DCS system does coordinate and control the processes in real time.

2) Furthermore, a SCADA system gets its data from remote terminal units (RTUs) that convert the analog signals from sensors into digital signals for the supervisory system. RTUs run independently except in case of emergency. SCADA communication path is through wireless or GSM. On the contrary, DCS controls the loops built into its own controller. Its communication path is through local area network (LAN) or high speed ethernet.

3) Additionally, SCADA is dat-acquisition-oriented or event-driven, while DCS is process-oriented or process-state-driven.

4) Moreover, SCADA is spread over a wide geographical location, but DCS controls process on a single locale.
