Java is a broadly used language, from android mobile applications to J2EE server systems. first decide for what kind of software development you want to use java, then start with the basics and go from there, practice everything by doing your self, and if you already have a solid background with OOP then it shouldn't take you long to start moving, however as I said java is widely implemented and as any other language of its spread, it takes time to learn best practices, and optimizations.
