from a deep view you must use usb flash with ubuntu if your PC doesn't support flash usb start up you can use hiren boot15.2 CD and when the menu appear use a program called plop to start up from usb flash

Or use it from live CD (but it is slow way)

so why using ubuntu from a flash but not from virtual box ?

because it take a lot of the ram and may hangs the computer especially if it was x86 or in another word using windows32 not64

virtual box is very good program but with powerful computer

the3rd way WUBi i think its good but i didn't try it and i think that it share memory like virtual box and it must be used with windows64

the4th one using2 operating system by grub2 boot loader and that the most dangers one and you must be professional to use it

if you want to use that way make backup to your system first

yes, can be

Installing ubuntu on a laptop with windows7 is as easy as installing windows.
Just simply boot with a ubuntu installation cd and simply choose to install on hard disk make an empty partition before boot from within windows system using disk manager.
Then just by installing the default GRUB which comes with ubuntu will take care of Dual booting.
I have a SONY VAIO E-series laptop and its running on it like a baby.
So far so good.
I even have configured the GNS3 and its perfect.
If you need any help goto ubuntu official website and use the forums.
Its all free.
Take care

Hi, You do the following:1.
Install windows.2.
Install VMW Player.3.
Install Ubuntu as a VM machine, and run it using VMW player.
Your windows will remain safe.

it can be done in two different ways

1. allow the ubuntu installer DVD/CD to find a free space in the disk and install. Further it will install a bootloader for booting both windows and linux. it gives a menu to select OS in the Power ON

2. use Virtualization tool such as VmWare Player or VmWare Workstation or Oracle VirtualBOX.

Select one method depends on your need

Cheers

You can download WUBI tool from Ubuntu site and choose the drive that you want to install the Ubuntu on it and start it , by this way you can dual boot with windows7 without damaing or resizing or managing partitions , and if you want to remove it just go to CONTROL PANEL then ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS and Uninstall it as any program and it will also removed without damaging data .

i am currently mobile due to work, also with examinations thus i will try to keep my response brief and concise as i will not be available for the nxt2 weeks.
Now when you say damage windows, are refering to your grub loader (lilo), your native partions, or is it file types associated with win7..
I think you may want take a look at this link lifehacker.com/5403100/dual+boot-windows-7-and-ubuntu-in-perfect-harmony Hope that helps :)

you could try also the windows installer provided by ubuntu, I have tried it in the past and it installs ubuntu12.04 lts easily creates partitions without harming your pc.
you can get it from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer

When it comes to installing dual OS, you have to be careful when it comes to partitions.
You can shrink your windows7 partition in the disk management and the space that shrinks (dedicate at least20GB), create a partition for Linux.
Worst case scenario if you can't shrink the partition, you can use any of these solutions.1.
Install Ubuntu as a VM machine.
I never try VMW player as I don't have idea on the performance issue.
I'm using Virtualbox by Oracle and for my experience it doesn't have any performance issues.2.
Install Ubuntu on your flash USB drive or external USB disk.
You can check this tutorial below.
