How do you answer interview question - "What did you earn at your last job?".

Looking for suggestions on how to answer this tricky question in a job interview. You mention your true salary and may sell yourself on less than what you could have gotten. You lie about the figures, you may get caught later on background checks. How do you choose to answer it?

In each interview, there are two things, namely: The first thing is what the employer likes to hear, and the second thing is the truth about you. If you use the first method and ask people for answers on potential interview questions, you will create a wrong profile about yourself, so the employer will have great expectations and you will not be able to fulfill all of what he asks you to do. The possible result will be the annulment of the work contract. My advice to you is: Be honest even though you did not earn so much as you would like to earn at your new job, also you know very well how much you're worth when you consider that there may  be many people with more years of experience than you, who also applied for the same position. Be realistic in making assessments about yourself. In that way you will help employers to create easily a real profile about you and if they hire you their expectations for the future will be realistic.

Dear All,

Thank you for your input.

I am of the opinion that we should concede a salary RANGE when asked directly about our previous salary. I believe recruiting managers are often given a salary range for the new position so it would be fair to focus more on that range. If one has the matching qualifications for the new position, s/he should be able to get the pay standards of the industry irrespective of what s/he gets in the previous job.

Further, I agree with Gabriela that we should also include benefits/perks that are on top of the basic salary simply because those benefits are part of our remuneration package.

giving a range is good. blatent honesty (exact figures) may not be necessary and not helpful in most cases. The whole reason of you changing the job (if for salary) is a better pay so you wouldnt want them to pay you a bare min difference from your old salary :-)

It is said that "Say one Truth or100 Lies...."

I would suggest to say as follows;

Sir, looking at the job opportunity and my experience it seems that I can match and can go beyond my capabilities to achieve the KPIs of your organization. Currently, as per market value, I am withdrawing xxxx amount as per my job responsibilities which is comparitively low as per your requirement and opportunities. I will be fortunate to fulfill your requirements.
