Head of Legal and Compliance

We are currently recruiting for a Head of Legal and Compliance to join our team here in Istanbul. This role will Lead the Legal and Compliance team in Turkey and will be an active core member of the L&C European Cluster team as well as the business leadership team of Alcon Turkey. This role will ensures that decisions made at International level, once vetted from a legal and compliance standpoint, are applied and executed in a consistent and efficient manner in Turkey and the role will support Head L&C International achieving the vision, mission and culture of the Legal & Compliance Function.


A typical day in this role will include;


  • Provides substantive and strategic L&C support to the Surgical and Vision Care Franchise heads and other local leaders and their respective teams, and more specifically advises on the execution of franchise projects at local level (launch of key products, new surgical business models and strategies, equipment financing agreements, pricing and discount policies, etc.);
  • Directly negotiates agreements for the local organization, i.e., equipment financing agreements, sale and purchase agreements, promotion agreements etc.
  • Mitigates litigation risk exposure, including risks derived from compliance law issues and employee relations, to defend and strengthen Alcon’s reputation;
  • Manages legal housekeeping and corporate secretarial work (archiving of contracts, minutes of the local organization boards and shareholder meetings etc.).
  • Monitors and influences legal and compliance developments; ensures that the business considers legal and compliance trends and risks in the execution of the business strategy;
  • Represents Alcon Legal to outside stakeholders, in particular the government and industry associations;
  • Ensures adherence to the Alcon Outside Counsel Policy and manages external law firms.
  • Manages the establishment of Compliance standards based on internal policies such as the Code of Business Conduct, the Conflict of Interest policies, the Anti-Bribery policy, the Lens etc. and all applicable local laws and regulations.
  • Oversees local requirements relating to national law and national industry codes and ensures that all business practices conducted in the cluster comply with such requirements and with the global minimal standards as contained in company-wide policies.
  • Facilitates the establishment and communication of local processes and SOPs, covering Promotional Content, Interactions with HCPs/Patients and Grants and any additional local requirements.
  • Establishes and implements local annual training plans, covering compliance standards.
  • Champions ethical tone throughout the organization, e.g. promote compliance standards through effective communication by actively involving local Senior/Middle Management to leverage messages on compliance and maintain high level of awareness.
  • Conducts compliance-related risk assessments.
  • Develops measures to self-monitor the compliance program in the cluster and implement corrective actions if necessary.
  • Ensures communication and implementation of the Ethics Helpline for reporting allegations of misconduct; Investigates alleged misconducts based on allocation of responsibility by the Ethics Helpline and support local management regarding disciplinary measures of misconduct.
  • Engages in Global Compliance Initiatives.

What You Will Bring to Alcon:


  • Extensive experience in legal practice (> 8 years), preferably significant (> 3 years) experience in legal practice related to the medical device/Pharma industry, however we will consider those from other regulated industries.
  • Proven ability to proactively provide insightful and timely legal support to stakeholders across a functionally and geographically dispersed organization.
  • University degree in Law and Bar admission in Turkey
  • Must be fluent in English.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Persuasive negotiator and ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Sound experience in litigation.
  • Passion for business integrity topic and impeccable integrity track record.
  • Ability to represent Alcon externally on integrity / compliance topics.
  • Experience with corporate responsibility and with balancing global standards and local cultures.
