Job Title: Field Archaeologist


Department: Historic Environment


Section: Archaeology and Palaeontology


UnitArchaeological Research (Al Dhafra & Abu Dhabi)


Role Purpose: 


Undertake archaeological watching briefs, evaluation, survey, research and rescue excavation work. Work on sites from the Palaeolithic to the Late Islamic periods to better understand the history and pre-history of Abu Dhabi utilizing the latest archaeological techniques and working in line with best practices and standards.


Key Responsibilities: 


Planned & Rescue Excavations


  • Plan and undertake surveys and field excavations under the direction of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi.
  • Conduct emergency rescue excavations on a year-round basis as required according to best practice.
  • Provide reports on lithics and stone tool assemblages.
  • Use appropriate tools and techniques to excavate archaeological sites, ensuring the preservation and documentation of archaeological artifacts and findings.
  • Record and document archaeological findings, including accurate measurements, photographs, sketches, detailed descriptions, and other required details.
  • Analyze artifacts and other materials recovered during excavations, utilizing appropriate methods and techniques.
  • Stay updated on current research, techniques, and developments in the field of archaeology through continuous development.

Excavation & Archaeology Data Reporting


  • Contribute in the interpretation of archaeological contexts to determine the historical significance.
  • Contribute in post-excavation reporting, analysis and publications of artefacts / archaeological findings, as required.
  • Prepare and/or contribute to internal reports on briefs, evaluations, and rescue excavations in a timely manner.
  • Provide expertise to relevant internal/external stakeholders on areas related to field archaeological excavation and documentation.
  • Ensure providing required archeological data to HER professionals, and participate in the preparation and enhancement of data, as required.
  • Manage and organize data related to field archaeology and prepare a post-excavation archive, as appropriate.

Contribution & Support


  • Work with learning and public engagement specialists, enabling effective community engagement with the archaeology, heritage, culture and history across the emirate of Abu Dhabi.
  • Contribute to the preparation of health and safety plans and in taking required actions to maintain high health and safety standards on site in close collaboration with DCT relevant teams.
  • Participate in the development of DCT museums narratives, particularly in areas related to field archaeology and excavations.

  • Carry out any other duties and responsibilities related to the role at the request of the direct manager.

Qualification: 


Bachelor’s degree (Masters’ preferred) in History, Archaeology, Anthropology, or equivalent. A PhD in a subject relating to the archaeology of the Arabian Peninsula is desirable.


Experience: 


At least 3-5 years in the field of Archaeology and/or an experience in a similar role. Experience of Arabian archaeology an advantage. Proven experience in archaeological fieldwork, including excavation, survey, and documentation. Proficient knowledge of archaeological methods, principles, and theories, with a solid understanding of stratigraphy and artifact analysis. Preferably with a focus on archaeological excavation and the analysis of archaeological field data from the Arabian Peninsula or Middle East. A demonstratable track record in the analysis and publication of lithics assemblages desirable.

  • Language: English proficiency both in speaking and writing; Proficiency in Arabic desirable
  • Skilled in MS Office (PowerPoint, Word and Excel)
  • Ability to guide and motivate juniors
  • Administrative skills and attention to detail
  • Self-motivated with a proven ability to complete work in a timely manner
  • Interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong research and report writing skills.
  • Good understanding of Arabian Archaeology with a particular focus on the Late Palaeolithic and Neolithic Periods.
