South Asia Mott MacDonald (SMM)


SMM Unit has focussed on domestic business for over past 50 years, by developing capabilities and experience in advisory, buildings, industry, infrastructure, environment, social development, and water sectors.  


Our 600+ staff is engaged in planning, developing, and delivering projects from five principal offices and over 15 project offices in India. We provide an array of key services for India's major markets – from business cases to development planning to engineering design and project and programme management. As well as being able to cover all stages of a project's cycle, we can offer assistance via our project management experts.


Role Purpose


This role is key to the continued growth of our South Asia business.  Sitting on the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) of this 600-person strong Unit, you will be responsible for leading and managing our Industry Division and will work under the direction of the SMM Unit General Manager, to lead and direct the Division in order to drive and deliver profitable, sustainable growth. Our Industry Division has seen significant growth in the last 3 years and has an exciting portfolio of projects for large Indian Corporates and a growing list of Multinational Corporates and our strategy is to continue on this trajectory at pace.


The Divisional General Manager (DGM) will be expected to deliver and embed Group and Unit strategies within the Division, drawing on their knowledge and understanding of the local market environment and inward investment into India. You will need to demonstrate sound business, financial and growth centred leadership. They will be expected to act as an ambassador and voice for Mott MacDonald within India, articulating and representing the brand, vision and value proposition, and be responsible for managing complex relationships and priorities.


Key Accountabilities


  • Communicate the division’s strategy and its relationship to the organisation’s purpose and values; clarify the actions needed to implement it within the area of responsibility; motivate people to commit to these to achieve the unit and business goals.
  • Working collaboration with the Unit SLT to continue to develop and implement our strategy for growth within the Industry Sector in India, anticipating complex issues, risks, and opportunities, and ensuring integration with the wider India business and corporate need.
  • Develop, propose and be accountable for the Industry Division annual business plan including financial and headcount budgets; business targets e.g., revenues, profits: and schedule key activities/internal projects, striving for continual improvement and collaboration with other parts of the India business
  • Manage and lead the Division in compliance with established company policies and Business Management Systems, as well as ensuring compliance with all relevant legislations and regulations, and client policies and procedures, to ensure the business is operating legally and to the requirements and directives of the Group;
  • Grow and nurture external relationships and build and maintain strong networks with key clients, business partners and competitors, driving joint initiatives where appropriate and using these networks to influence and impact the growth and direction of the business.
  • Using an in-depth understanding of local market drivers and the competitive landscape to support the Account Leaders in the preparation and delivery of client Customer Engagement Plans.  Working collaboratively with the Unit Development Manager monitor progress against these to ensure the Division achieves its objectives and optimises financial performance, operational productivity and social outcomes
  • Be accountable for the technical governance of projects and programmes being delivered in the Division, ensuring suitably qualified, experienced personnel are hired, developed and deployed to manage risk appropriately in line with our internal Governance Processes. Support Talent Acquisition in the identification, interviewing and onboarding of talent as needed. 
  • Perform operational reviews within the Division and support with the design of improvements to optimise performance and productivity.
  • Develop and implement staff development activities including regular talent/performance reviews, career pathways, promotions, EDI plans, learning and development plans, Group development programme selection, coaching and mentoring programmes, professional development programmes, and succession plans in collaboration with key Unit, Practice, Regional and Group stakeholders. 
  • Establish, nurture and supervise an innovative, challenging, collaborative and high performing work environment, which supports and fosters the Mott MacDonald values and culture. 
  • Continually improve employee engagement, retention, wellbeing and opportunities for all in the Division, by utilising appropriate people management processes and principles, thereby contributing towards making Mott MacDonald the employer of choice;
  • Drive value through enabling functions ensuring appropriate use, effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Undertake operational work where this is of strategic value to the business. 

Candidate will possess the following key attributes: 


  • Demonstrated experience of running a commercial business division with complete responsibility of leading a multi-disciplinary team of technical experts, business development, operations, key accounts and delivery teams.
  • Has a collaborative mindset that aims to deliver innovation and the best outcomes.
  • Has strong experience in leading complex projects in the built environment but ideally in the industrial sector and can bring innovation and excellence from different projects/locations to drive efficiency.
  • Has worked for a broad range of clients including large multinational corporate organisations investing in India and overseas.
  • Can anticipate and balance the needs of multiple stakeholders and can speak clearly about the need for the organisation to adhere to strong ethics and show cultural understanding when working with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effectively builds formal and informal relationship networks inside and outside the organisation and has a strong network in India and ideally international connections.
  • Understand business KPIs and their interaction with each other as a measure of overall business performance.
  • Uses comprehensive knowledge and/or skills to act independently while providing guidance and training to others on identifying, assessing, prioritising, and managing risks.
  • Holds self and others accountable to meet commitments. For example, emphasises accountability, measures organisational performance against goals, addresses poor team performance, does not accept blaming others or excuses.
