In this role, you have the opportunity for design, development and Supplier co-ordination on various programs spanning across functions within Philips to deliver a complete product development for Sleep and Respiratory Care Business within Philips.



  • The Mechanical Architect defines the structure of the subsystem that is to be developed, based upon customer requirements/product specifications and technology trends. He defines the way in which the subsystem has to be divided into separate components and/or modules.


  • The Mechanical Architect also formulates the technical roadmap for his subsystem, conducts innovation studies, and leads the introduction of new technologies.


  • Jobholder comes to an understanding with E2E development concerning the hardware/Mechanical and software interfaces and other development architects concerning interfaces.


  • By means of planned reviews he/she ensures - from technical point of view - that the efforts of the individual developers remain focused on properly functioning subsystems.


  • The Mechanical Architect is technically responsible for the correct functioning of the integrated subsystems




You are responsible for


  • Creation of the Mechanical architecture in modular, easy to maintain and extendible (components and modules) and re-usable.


  • The Mechanical architect would ensure that the proposed architecture would have the safety and reliability features build in.


  • The Mechanical architect is responsible for ensuring that architecture meets the performance criteria.


  • Formulates the technical roadmap, relevant for his subsystem considering technologies, application trends, conducts Concept & Feasibility studies. Leads the introduction of new technologies.


  • Technically responsible for the subsystem in (sub-) projects. Delegate, control and verify that the electronics is build according to his architecture. Verifies that the integration is according to the architecture.


  • Ensures the mutual consistency and efficient integration of the separate components in modular, easy-to-maintain electronics that meets the product specification.


  • Guides the Mechanical Engineers & Designers in the design and implementation of the parts of a subsystem.


  • Participates in the system architecture definition and in the Product Requirement Specification; advises the System Architect regarding choices of what must be achieved in hardware and what in software (multidisciplinary) and advises on make-or-buy decisions.


  • Determines required subsystem interface (hardware/software) in close consultation with software experts.


  • Contributes to the Work Breakdown Structure/ the planning process of his/her area. Draws up personal schedule and reports on progress.


  • Has expertise in design techniques, application domain and engineering. Keeps it up-to-date and propagates it, both internal and external.


  • Advises on internal development or outsourcing.


  • Managing R&D relationships with Engineering service suppliers. 


  • Supervising design activities at the design partner, participating in design reviews and risk assessments (e.g. FMEA) and monitoring (technical) progress and technical risk mitigation.


  • Has an important say in the choice of development environment and has ultimate responsibility for the top-level design.


  • Networks with colleagues within BU and beyond and maintains external contacts for benchmarking, new technologies, tooling, design methods, and reflects them to the group.


  • Ability to create an environment to ensure maximized engagement of the department employees.


  • Is abreast of / participates in standards identification responsible for designing.


  • Formulates improvements within his own domain of expertise such as technical and process improvements etc.


  • Acts in line with departmental and project processes (QMS).

To succeed in this role, you’ll need a customer-first attitude and the following


  • Master/bachelor’s in mechanical engineering with 10 to 15 years of experience.


  • Ability to technically lead a team with a Domain Expertise in Machine Design, Mechanism Design, and Materials, Value Engineering.


  • Analytical, creative, and intellectual thinker, with ability to perform mechanical design calculations & verify designs.


  • Good Knowledge of Manufacturing processes like Sheet Metal & Fabrication / Plastic / Machining while designing.


  • Excellent command on, skills like Reliability, DFSS (Design for Six Sigma), Risk Analysis, DFMEA, DFM, GD & T, Tolerance Stack up Analysis, etc.


  • Lateral thinker with bird’s eye view, capable of finding an appropriate solution to complex problems.


  • Is capable to introduce new technologies and efficiency improvements on group level (change management).


  • Knowledge of and experience in hardware/software interfaces, understanding of cross functional operations.


  • Exposure to work on global environment, ability to communicate on different levels, good listener, coach and guide project team, with good presentation skills.


  • Working knowledge of CAD And Simulation Tools like ProE / SolidWorks / Windchill / Ansys Classic / Ansys Workbench will be added advantage.


  • Exposure to International Medical Quality and Regulatory Standards e.g. IEC, FDA, CFR, MDD, UL, CE, CSA, BIS etc will be added advantage.


  • Experience in the field of Medical Devices product design is an advantage
