Responsibilities
  • What you'll do
    • Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs a broad range of telecommunications cabling media to include coaxial, fiber optic, Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP), main telephone feeder cable (200,400,600 pair etc.) via MDF’s inside the telecommunication facility. Installs cable racks, conduit, Panduit, and other support structures for the protection and aesthetics of cables. Tests cable for signal quality, continuity, and availability. Terminates and splices both copper and fiber optic cable. Provides interconnection service inside the telecommunication facility and extends telecommunication links to the local (OSP) department. Reports to Work Center Supervisor or Site Lead.
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Pull telecommunications cabling throughout the telecommunication facility.
    • The building architecture could be both (permanent or temporary, including tactical shelters) with cables being routed inside the building’s interior ceilings, raised floors, conduits, and cable trays.
    • Operate power tools and hand tools as outlined in the performance work statement to complete mission requirements.
    • Terminate Category 5 & 6 UTP, coaxial, telephone, and fiber optic cables at designated workstations inside the telecommunication facility and MDF distribution frames.
    • Prepare telecommunications MDF’S to function as central and secondary interconnection point for telecommunications cabling networks.
    • Provide service at the demarcation MDF’s to transfer (customer end user) service over to the OSP Outside Plant Department.
    • Install hardware/systems such as cable trays, ladder racks, J-Hooks, and/or D-rings to support telecommunications cable pulls.
    • Test and certify Category 5 & 6 UTP cabling, fiber optic and main feeder cable with ohm meters, toners, and Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR).
    • Splice copper and fiber optic cabling.
    • Troubleshoot and correct both copper and fiber optic cable problems for lack of continuity, noise, signal loss and degradation, improper termination, excessive loss, and intermittent problems.
    • Establish and maintain cable records, utilizing database software such as Remedy to track and control work orders, interpret drawings to troubleshoot service-related issues.
    • Additional Duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Education/Certifications: One-year related experience may be substituted for one year of education if degree is required.
  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience:
    • Requires 5 - 7 years of experience in the installation / repair of a LAN / PABX communication facility preferred.
  • Certification:
    • Fiber Optic repair Course preferred.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Required to climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and drive over rough terrain. Some maintenance will expose you to insulation, extreme heat, water, and heights. The outside work environment will also be very hot due to conditions within the region of assignment. Personnel may also be required to stand for long periods of time.
