This kind of attitude shows that this colleague is jealous with you and trying to provoke you by passing sarcasm comments and doing silly things. Try to avoid his attitude and do not reply him in the same way as he does. Instead, as a manager you can conduct a meeting in which you can raise points whether your employees are happy with your management and also discuss the type of environment and attitude you are expecting from them. Do not point him and argue with him straight away, otherwise you will lose the support of another colleagues. Your patience will support you throughout. Bad attitude impose a bad nature and soon other colleagues will realize that you are kind to him but he is trying to provoke you all the time, so try to handle things intelligently and smartly by showing patience and act as a good manager as I hope you will be Good Luck..!!

Its true that such people are irritating and disturbing to anyone. But as a manager, it is our responsibility to take care of the situation in a clever way. In such case, the manager should ask tat employee to buddy another employee and monitor what that employee is doing in various situations at work.

We can also allocate him/her with more responsibilities so that he/she takes an ownership of work and is compelled to use his/her mind for problem solving instead of asking others.

Use counter strategy:-

1)  Get Friendly to know his / her psyche and act accordingly

2)  Realize him/her that whatever he/she is doing is nonproductive and doesn't bear anything on you.

3)  If positive reinforcement doesn't work, report the matter to higher authorities as no matter how important the colleague is, he is not above the code of conduct of the org.

4)  Remember no body is indispensable. every body has got his/her replacement.

If you are an important employee to the org and the act of someone else effect your performance than that needs to be eliminated and its the responsibility of the org. Org doesn't want to retain unproductive employees.

Ms Naveen Chandani have very well replied the question. The very best strategy is to stay calm in such situations & don’t do something that you regret later. Deny them the satisfaction of getting you riled. When you stay calm, you really annoy those who want to annoy you. By staying calm you will enjoy greater peace of mind and be more free to act decisively and constructively. Aristotle said – "it’s not about getting angry, it’s about getting angry in the right way. And in most situations, keeping your cool is better for you, and produces better results".

People often go through such situations at work place. Be sensitive to the fact that people aren't perfect. No one is immune to habits that can be annoying to others however if that particular case is effecting your daily performance than try to find a solution..

Initially speak up & tell the special one that  his /her presence / act is effecting your performance which isn't good for business / department.

Be calm & diplomatic - Discuss the same with your other team members and identify if they are suffering too.

Don't get stressed or hyper, take a deep breath or walk away for a short break and convince yourself that every employee  in his / her career meets such character and by handling such colleagues one becomes a good leader. Stay positive !

If the situations gets worsen; Escalate it your HR buddy / Manager  which is the last option.

Don't allow anyone to steal your joy at work or take up valuable space in your day !

Happy Working,

Sadiq Khan
