Consumer oriented means focusing on “consumer behavior” heavily.  With Globalization and availability of technology, world has come very much closer and perception and behavior of customers are also coming closer to each other.

Let us think of marketing of a particular airlines say “Emirates”: Its marketing strategy is same throughout the world because the expectation and behavior pattern of all of their customers is same. Customers need a reliable airline which takes them to their destination on time, with fringes like inflight entertainment or charger point for laptop and good food. Emirates has been able to provide their customers all of these and they have become a “success story” within a short span of time

it means that producers and manufacturers make products upon willingness of consumers to purchase and not because they can. Every new product is made because customers want it. 2-3 decades ago any company can make a product and market for it and customers will buy, but not today.

This means that today's marketing is targeted with the end user in mind, this being the customer.Globally I will make reference to coca cola who have launched public campaigns geared towards making coca cola the best drink in the world in competition with tea and coffee. The recent coca cola campaign of share a coke feeling are geared towards  touching a feeling or emotions which gives it a very human feeling as this is what we usually identify ourselves with as well as connect with..

A service offered by companies that focuses on the internal and external needs of a business'scustomers. Consumer orientation establishes and monitors standards of customer satisfaction and strives to meet the clientele's needs and expectations related to the product or service sold by the businessAs today the market is characterised by a number of products, a variety of diverse customers and stiff competition. In such a scenario, marketing with consumer in mind has become a necessity. Marketing managers are shifting their focus from selling a product to creating something that is needed. Starting from product creation to selling and servicing, consumer focus is given the utmost priority. The focus group discussions, Surveys and feedbacks done by companies to understand consumers are some examples to show how much importance is given to consumers

In recent days market is witnessing a change in consumerism. The market is now predominantly consumer driver. The focus is shifting for product based marketing to need based marketing. Consumer is given many options to decide. Success of a company / service provider depends on the high quality relationship with customers which determines customer satisfaction and loyalty.

What is meant by consumer oriented? Simply stated, it is the process of making an informed purchase with one’s own money that results in getting the best perceived value for the needed good or service.

Some Examples -

1. Health Plan : Health care costs are once again out of control, today every Health Insurence company are providing various options which suits to customer needs & wants. In addition to that some of companies started EMI option (Ex Relaince Insurence).

2. United Parcel Service: During the 1980s, the United Parcel Service transitioned from an operations-oriented company to one that focuses primarily on customer orientation. This decision was due in part to increased market competition that forced UPS to change its efficiency-focused philosophy. This is not to suggest that the customer-orientation model does not value efficiency as an important factor in business. It just is not the main factor -- customer satisfaction is. This required UPS to change its corporate culture, including reshaping how employees viewed their roles and functions within the organization. For example, in 1994, UPS created 15 cross-functional teams whose objective was to develop creative transportation-related solutions for its largest customers. By 1997, this developed into a separate subsidiary, UPS Professional Services, Inc., a company charged with focusing on the needs of its largest customers.

100%!

Consumers dictate what they want, and good marketeers listen and connect with their audience.

Consumers these days expect accountability (climate friendly, no child labor used, etc), hence you see big corporations like Unilever for instance increasing CSR activities to appear to be more conscious and empathetic!

Excellent Question.

To answer your question just give 1 minute to what is consumer oriented market. A consumer oriented market is a market where services and products are offered that focuses on the internal and external needs of a business's customers. Consumer orientation establishes and monitors standards of customer satisfaction and strives to meet the clientele's needs and expectations related to the product or service sold by the business.

The biggest example is Apple having cash more then US Govt. and the company having fastest growth rate.

Apple is well known for their customer-centricity. Here are a few of their policies, practices and features that constantly keep them on the lists of top customer service oriented companies:

·         They ensure that upper management read customer emails regularly. In fact, CEO Tim Cook reads customer emails daily.

·         They mimic features from the hospitality industry. For example, many argue that their Genius Bar is a direct emulation of a hotel’s concierge.

·         They take care of their employees – which has an obvious effect on the customer.

Obviously it is. Without consumers, there is no need for marketing. Based on an example of sanitary napkins industry which I know - in Europe women use short sanitary pads (230mm for day, and 280mm for night) and generally market goes into more modern solutions - like tampons and menstrual cups. But all market leaders (like P&G, J&J) follow the pattern. While in India - such length of pads is considered short and right now you can buy even 400mm pads! And the same - all manufacturers are adapting the products to consumers' demands!

The points are very well explained earlier by other specialists. You can take example of any fast food chain: Be it KFC. Mcdonald's, Burger KIng  ...... so on and so forth. Their menu is always based on local food practices and preferences.
