If you get a job in the public sector in any Arab country, then your luck! Less work loads, pension, no accountability.

Obviously, job security is the biggest difference. In public sector you have a secured job, while in private business there is fear that the business might be dissolved, downsizing, and project closed etc. Another general perception is that public job is considered to be easy going, in which one need not to make too much efforts, and that is because government sector has already their SOPs laid down, while in private one has to make full day harder efforts, procedure, rules and regulations may be changed immediately and new challenges arose frequently, and one has to adopt accordingly. On the other hand, in public sector one has to work according to pre-defined rule. Simply you can say that public sector only top management has the power to take initiative while in private sector, being a system of participative management, almost all can take initiative.

Private Sector: Stress, competition, challange, fear to loss of job

Public Sector: Relax, less competition, not fear to loss of job.

Wow! The standards for public sector are everywhere the same! This situation applies for Greece also. Even today, during this economic crisis, the jobs in the public sector are secured even if they have less wages than before. But it's surely better than the private sector where there has been a complete stripping, not only on paychecks but on working rights also!

For Western and Middle Eastern countries, working in the government will get you better pay, better benefits and job security, plus you have a lot of holidays! especially here in the Middle East.

In public sector, there is sense of security and less work or predetermined work functions. In Private sector there is more opportunity to make your career or become a specialist / expert in your work area. You can have fast track growth in private sector based on your performance.

It depends in which country you are located, 'cos in some countries working in Public sector is a pleasure as Nuha said earlier, but in all terms and in everywhere working in a private sector is more serious than the Public sector

The main advantages are:

  1. Stability (Secured jobs)

  2. Harder to be fired

  3. Less workload

  4. Ability to move from one federal position to another and still retain the same benefits, vacation, and sick days as you did in the last job

  5. Benefit packages offered

In India i speny the first13 years working for a Public Sector Enterprise which is india's largest steel producing company with a turn over of US $8.2 billion - sounds fantastic . The trurh of the the matter is PSE's have rules & more rules - right from recruitment which is a robust process till you seperate from the Company

What are the advantages - you get well trained coz job is for life time offcouse during recession there will be periodic withdrawl of certain perks & with the upswing of the economy they are back Top PSE CTC is pretty good with free housing , loans etc- you get learning opportunity - stability of a location - travel is less - with time you will become more comfortable with the way of life & once you are settled down - a number of subordinates to report to you - you only need to lead & give orders as success is all yours & failure is collective or owing to the system or process- The rule book for all items are omni present & you cannot bypass any of it

Disadvantages - if you are an entreprenur or enterprising you will get frustrated as your ideas will be treated as smart as you are trying to bypass your superiors - the job will become static after sometime so it will be experience +1 every year - you will remain limited within your zone of work & can hardly function - there will be a time when you will have nothing more to give or take so in a status quo therefore yu take a decision to leave

The private sector is always a place which will respect your individual skill & capability & the soon you are recognised you will be loaded with more & more responsibility & expected to work the extra mile as a result you will be a quick decision maker, make more money be responsible for all you actions with in the frame work of your job & all success & failures are attributed to you so the gains can be significant with a downside of a loss in pay too if performance does not meet require standard

all in all the choice is the individuals - what does he want in life
